Jacob Giles Todd

Jacob Giles Todd was born 14 Nov 1828 in Tattnall Co., according to both his 1900 census entry and his Civil War pension application. (There are over 20 pages regarding his application at GSU Docuweb.Click on next and click on thumbnail for a larger view).

Jacob m. (1) Isabelle Todd 9 May 1852 (source: Annette B. Todd) Isabelle, b. abt 1831, was the daughter of William Todd, Jr. (William Sr., John Todd, Jr., John Todd, Sr.) What their relationship to each other was besides husband and wife is not known as we don't really know who Jacob's father's parents were. Isabelle died sometime before 1860 as she was not found in her husband's household in the 1860 census.

Jacob m. 7 Oct 1867 in Charlton Co. Ga.
(2)Amy E. Miller b. 12 Oct 1836 in Ware Co. Ga.
She was one of the 16 children of Ezekiel Stafford Miller and Eleanor Dyess. Amy was a widow of Robert Rowland who was killed during the Civil War. Her entry in Charlton County Marriages is recorded as Mrs. Amey E. Rowland.

As a side note of interest just to my own family, Laura Platt (great Grandma Burke's mother) was a widow of William Francis Dyess when she married Lee Clark. William shares a common ancestor with Eleanor Dyess.
Jacob was in his father's household in 1830 in the under 5 bracket. The 1840 page his father would be on seems to be missing. He was also in his father's household in 1850.

1860 Appling Co. Ga. census:

name age
Jacob Todd 32
Mary 7
George 5
These two were the children of Isabelle.

Militiary Service:
He served under Gordon's Brigade in Company G, 26th Georgia Regiment for 3 years. He was wounded at Shepherdstown, WVa and sent home. See links at the beginning of this post for more information on his pension application.

1870 Charlton Co. Ga. census:

name age
Todd, Jacob 40
Amy 34
Mary E. 16
Geo. W. 13
(Rowland) Robin Ezekiel 10
Susan 9
Robert 6
Todd, Isabella 1

Jacob was a farmer with a real estate value of $400 and another $400 in personal estate. Jacob's brother, Charles D. is also found in Charlton County in 1870.

1880 Charlton Co. Ga. census:

name age relationship
Todd, Jacob G. 57 (head)
Amy 40 wife
George 21 son
Amy I. (Isabella) 11 daughter
John 9 son
Martha 6 daughter
Emma 2 daughter

Where their other children were in 1880:

Mary is in the next household, under the name Mollie Todd with three children: Eddie, Aggie (aka Agnes), and James (no husband). cf. her death announcement in Charlton County Herald, extracted by Okefenokee Press: Survivors include her children Eddie Todd and Mrs. Aggie Johns, and brother, John Todd and sister, Mrs.Emma Harrell.

(Robin) Ezekiel Rowland is in the household of David Brown, married to his daughter, Caroline.(Charlton Co. Marriages)

Susan Rowland is in the household of Eaton Taylor (4 households up from Jacob), married to his son, William. (Charlton Co. marriages) There are two William Taylors listed in Charlton Co. Marriages, one married Susan Rowland and the other married Louisa Vickery. Both couples are found in the 1880 census, so they are two different William Taylors.

Eaton Taylor served in the same unit as Jacob Todd and was a witness on his pension application. His daughter, Ella married Susan's brother, Robert.

Robert Rowland is in the household of Owen K. Mizell as hired help.

1900 Charlton Co. Ga. census:

name DOB relationship
Todd, Jacob Nov 1828 head
Amy Apr 1846 (sic) wife
Ham, Emma Dec 1878 daughter
Carter, Isabell Jan 1897 g. daughter
Ham, Ellen May 1900 g. daughter
Todd, Frankie Jan 1887 g. daughter

Emma m. N.B. Ham 13 Jul 1899 (Charlton Co. Marriages) I don't know whether she was widowed or divorced.

I'm not sure who Frankie is. That she is listed out of chronological order indicates that she was not the child of Emma, but someone else's.

Where their other children were in 1900

Mary is now married to Frank Daniels (Charlton Co. Marriages), and their household is the one before her brother, George's.

George is heading his own household (a few up from his father) with two daughters and some boarders, but no wife. He married Mattie E. Wheelis 17 Oct 1887. At this time, Mattie Todd is in the household of Henry Crews as a boarder, in Charlton Co.

Amy Isabella- unknown

John is in the next household after his father's with his wife.

Martha is in the household of her husband, Sherman Campbell in Charlton Co. (Charlton Co. marriages: S.L. Campbell to Martha Todd)

Susan (Rowland) is now married to Lewis (or Louis) Floyd (Charlton Co. Marriages: Louis Floyd and Mrs. Susan Taylor; also her death certificate- parents: Robert Roling (sic) and Amy Miller; husban: Lewis Floyd). Her husband's household is the one before Sherman Campbell's- her step-sister's husband.

Both Ezekiel and Robert are in Ware Co. Ga. with their respective families. Robert is now married to Ella Taylor.

1910 Charlton Co. Ga. census

name age relationship
Todd, James G. (sic) 82 head
Amie E. 73 wife
Ham, Emma 31 daughter
Isabel 12 granddau.
Ellen 9 granddau.
Albert 5 grandson
Ezekiel L. 2 grandson

This is the last time both Jacob and Amy are found in census records, so they died sometime thereafter. There is a tombstone at Sardis Cemetery for a J.G. Todd b. 18 Oct 1829, d. 1 Mar 1911, which some claim is Jacob G. Todd. It's possible, even with the DOB discrepancy. However, there is no tombstone for his wife, Amy. Either she is in an unmarked grave or buried elsewhere. Most of the Charlton County Todds are buried at Sardis.

It appears that Albert and Ezekiel's last names were Layton, according to other records.

Where the other children werein 1910:

Mary and Susan are still in Charlton Co.

George appears to be missing, but he is found with his sister, Mary in 1920.

Ezekiel Rowland is still in Ware Co.

John's family moved to Coffee Co. Ga.

Martha's family moved to Clinch Co. Ga.

Amy Isabella- still unknown.
